The Sklar Brothers present "Breaking Away" (stars Paul Dooley & Dennis Christopher in person!)

Two nice Jewish boys from St. Louis — Randy and Jason Sklar — bring to the festival an American heartland classic. Filled with killer moments of choreographed bike racing, Breaking Away is so much more than a coming-of-age movie, for it also addresses the hidden “class distinction” side of our country’s society. Directed by Peter Yates (Bullitt), we follow an eccentric teen and his three townie friends (Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley, all in outstanding performances) who compete socially and economically with the preppy snobs at Indiana University, all while our hero struggles to connect with his old-school dad (the always-great Paul Dooley.) Culminating in a rivalrous bike tournament, this high-spirited study in the pains of being young pulls off a tremendous balance between small-town romance, generation-gap comedy, flights of fancy, and suspenseful cycling sequences — as well as having beat out Woody Allen’s Manhattan for Best Original Screenplay at its year’s Oscars. Randy and Jason Sklar will be here at the Cinefamily to introduce the film, and participate in a Q&A afterwards with Breaking Away co-stars Dennis Christopher and Paul Dooley!
Dir. Peter Yates, 1979, 35mm, 100 min.
