The Hands of Orlac (world premiere of live score by Hauschka!)

Co-presented by 89.9 KCRW

Once in a blue moon, Cinefamily has the opportunity to pair two entities that are so fitting, so meant for each other, that we can justify calling the event “once-in-a-lifetime.” There will never be another screening of The Hands of Orlac — the haunting silent German Expressionist horror classic — quite like tonight’s, where it will be in the hands of world-renowned pianist and composer Hauschka. Directed by Cabinet of Dr. Caligari helmer Robert Wiene, Orlac stars Conrad Vliet (also the star of Caligari) as a concert pianist who loses his hands in an accident, and has them replaced with those of a killer. Tonight, this shadowy, melancholy story will be channeled through Hauschka, known for his resonant, challenging pieces in which he often alters the piano strings or mallets with found objects to gorgeous effect, in a score specifically commissioned for Nightmare City.
Dir. Robert Wiene, 1924, digital presentation, 90 min.
