The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack (plus live tunes by Ramblin' Jack Elliott!)

“[T]he grace of forgiveness shines through with such clarity, with such genuine appeal, you may actually emerge from the theatre a better person. Don’t miss it.” -Jamie Hook, The Seattle Stranger

“Anyone with any feeling for American music should see this film. Basically everyone should see this film.” – Jeff Wells, Park City Confidential

Few cowboys remain that know the backroads like Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, nor are there many who’ve forged their own myth quite like him. Part Johnny Appleseed and part Babe the Blue Ox, Jack’s played on damn near every bill the history books would call part of a folk revolution; he traveled with Woody, and took a young Zimmy under his wing. The stories this guy can tell about the twists ‘n turns in the road of life, and about the roots of what we cosmically know as American music, couldn’t all be written down in a book. Thankfully, we have The Ballad of Ramblin’ Jack, the 2000 documentary that helped to fuel Jack’s resurgence in pop culture and the very personal filmic statement by his daughter Aiyana, who uncovers the story of a travelling troubadour who forged an unusual bond with his loved ones despite his prolonged absence. A prismatic look at the hard-scrabble man behind all the hootin’ and hollerin’, The Ballad… is a treasure trove of stellar performances and candid revelations. Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Aiyana Elliot will be here in person for remarks after the show, plus Jack will grace us with an intimate handful of live tunes!
Dir. Aiyana Elliott, 2000, 35mm, 112 min.
