In addition to being one of the sharpest stand-ups and mind-warpingly quick-draw improv comics in the Northern Hemisphere, Greg Proops is The Smartest Man In The World — or, at least that’s what he murmured to us late one night on the Cinefamily back patio, in-between sips of Chablis and other sips of Old Milwuakee. One thing we know for sure: it’s an apt moniker for his lugubrious, salacious, verbacious, voracious weekly Proopcast. The concept: it’s just Proops and you. There’s no fan fare. Proops takes center stage at a small table-and-chair setup with a single microphone — then he’s off. An hour of great conversation that flies by at a breakneck clip, cramming the feeling of a great two-way conversation into the lecture-style format of a one-way conversation. Tonight, Greg records his latest episode live on the Cinefamily stage, but not before wallowing in the 35mm awesomeness of the ‘80s sci-fi flick The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai! Peter Weller is a test-driver/physicist/rock star who has to save the world. Jeff Goldblum is a neurosurgeon in a cowboy outfit. The bad guys are alien Rastas from another dimension (and so are the good guys.) Ellen Barkin is kicked around some in a mini-skirt. The fun never stops. Proops will deconstruct, reanimate and regale this fine classic, plus tackle 467 ancillary tangents in an expert flick of the verbal wrist. Be there!
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension Dir. W. C. Richter, 1984, 35mm, 102 min.
