SPECTREFEST: Dead Snow + Dead Snow 2: Red Vs. Dead (L.A. premiere, Martin Starr, Jocelyn DeBoer & filmmaker Tommy Wirkola in person!)

DEAD SNOW – 7:30pm
What’s better than a zombie movie? How about a tank-driving, gun-toting Swastika-emblazoned Fascist bastard of a zombie movie?! Indie horror filmmaking of the early day Raimi/Craven kind is alive and well in Norway; with 2009’s Dead Snow, Tommy Wirkola (who would later go on to helm the Hollywood flick Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) adds his icy touch to the kind of low-budget, high-concept gore which those celebrated forefathers made great. Utilizing all the classic set pieces — the remote cabin, a group of rowdy, randy students, the stranger at the door, a white-out blizzard which makes escape impossible — Wirkola adds high speed humor and bucket loads of blood to come up with a fresh powder take on the walking-dead genre.
Dir. Tommy Wirkola, 2009, 35mm, 91 min.

DEAD SNOW 2: RED VS. DEAD – approx. 9:15pm
Director Tommy Wirkola, plus cast members Martin Starr & Jocelyn DeBoer in person! Picking up just a few moments after the first film left off, the brand-new Red vs. Dead offers a dizzy second round of fascist flesh feasters and Nordic black humor. Once again, the stark winter wonderland is stained crimson with the blood of innocents, as Colonel Herzog and his enraged battalion of decomposing National Socialists descend to enact ultra-violent revenge. With his fighting arm amputated and mysteriously replaced with a zombie-fied limb, Dead Snow’s protag Martin elicits the help of a motley group of American zombie film nerds (including our favorite Freaks and Geeks/Silicon Valley uber-dork Martin Starr) to take on the hordes of undead. Just plain good, goofy, gory fun!
Dir. Tommy Wirkola, 2014, DCP, 100 min.
