Sexperiments 2 feat. Peter Tscherkassky's ‘The Exquisite Corpus’

Co-presented by MUBI

Prolific new means of production and methods of distribution surged through the independent filmmaking world in the 1990s, ushering in a period of experimentation and expansive freedom. New, disparate voices came to the fore, putting a postmodern spin on the age-old spectacle of sex in cinema. The filmmakers selected for tonight’s shorts compilation—including boundary-pushers Peggy Ahwesh, Tom Palazzolo, Naomi Unman and Lewis Klahr, and a cameo from children’s book illustrator Tomi Ungerer—employ a myriad of styles, from the stained glass mosaics of The Color of Love to the gritty, verité footage of Sneakin’ and Peekin’ and the physical erasure of the female form in Removed.

Tonight’s centerpiece film, The Exquisite Corpus, is the most recent of the mix, from acclaimed avant-garde filmmaker Peter Tscherkassky, master manipulator of found celluloid. With painstaking precision, Tscherkassky has handcrafted a narrative composed of erotic and pornographic footage from the 1960s-1980s, an ideal subject for a filmmaker devoted to the seductive properties of film itself, and a striptease in more ways than one.

Peter Tscherkassky is currently being featured on MUBI, a curated online cinema featuring handpicked films from around the globe.
