Reversal of Fortune

Good old jolly, creepy summer fun. Jeremy Irons is fantastically demonic as Claus Von Bulow, the gold-digging husband who tries to do in his rich wife Sunny, the chilly and vulnerable Glenn Close. She tells the story from the cinematic, comatose beyond while Claus hires the world’s greatest criminal lawyer, Alan Dershowitz—played with gusto by Ron Silver. Everyone is playing hard in their roles and you have to watch closely to follow all the twists. Is it a murder mystery? A courtroom drama? A diatribe on class, the wealthy, and the American Justice system? A screed about how even the richest women can be victims of violence? Or most likely a mordant, morbid comedy by the great arty director Barbet Schroeder. Bring insulin. Stay for the popcorn. Then we get Chinese food. Ah. I think now I’ll have my own individual order of ginger prawns.

Dir. Barbet Schroeder, 1990, 35mm, 111 min.
