The great Martha Coolidge, queen of quirky ’80s comedies, follows up her success with Valley Girl by directing one of the smartest of the many ‘geek vs. the world’ classics of the era. Real Genius gives Weird Science and Revenge of the Nerds a real run for their money – as Coolidge gently guides the narrative away from cliché and easy “teen movie” tropes. Instead, we get Val Kilmer, baby fat still intact, delivering a wildly charismatic performance as a wry, burnt-out adolescent genius, fighting against the combined evils of the ivy league/corporate/military industrial complex. There are also lots of lasers, a hit soundtrack featuring Bryan Adams and Tears for Fears and a climatic finale which apparently necessitated 3 months of popcorn popping by the film’s props department. Real genius, indeed.

Dir. Martha Coolidge, 1985, 35mm, 108 min.
