MEMBERS-ONLY: God Help The Girl (sneak preview, Stuart Murdoch in person!)

Filmmaker/Belle & Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch in person. Plus, DJ Jennifer Kirk (KXLU 88.9fm) will be here to spin tunes before the show! It’s rare to find articulate-yet-dulcet pop music capable of moving the masses, but Stuart Murdoch has done so with impeccable taste for two decades. It’s this process, and the resulting setbacks that both hinder and propel young, tragically gifted musicians that fuels God Help the Girl, Murdoch’s eagerly-awaited feature debut as writer/director. Based on B&S’s 2009 album of the same name, the film follows fragile troubadour Eve (Emily Browning) as she discovers her talent alongside teenage bandmates James and Cassie (Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray.) Unlike flashier genre examples, God Help the Girl’s musical numbers are woven understatedly into the dense narrative fabric — and the film’s distinct hues (warmly lensed in 16mm) garner a dreamy nostalgia further captured in choreography a la the “Madison dance” from Godard’s Band of Outsiders: limbs swung jauntily through the melody, imbued with a freedom of expression that only comes with true camaraderie. With flair to spare, God Help The Girl gives you literate pop earworms, and the sweet satisfaction of diving into honest kid characters with talent to burn. “God Help The Girl” opens on Friday, September 5th at the Laemmle Royale!
Dir. Stuart Murdoch, 2014, DCP, 111 min.
