Masters of Polish Animation - The '70s/'80s: Rybczynski and the Radical Outer Limits

Presented by the Polish Cultural Institute New York & Cinespia

If their golden age of ‘50s-’60s animation was an exploratory satellite into the creative cosmos, the work of Polish animators into the ‘70s-’80s ventured ever further into the darker recesses of that void, determinedly diving into weird wormholes to bend time and space. With an overarching aesthetic that would feel right at home on a prog rock album cover of the era, these visual voyagers employed groundbreaking techniques of photographic manipulation and visual effects to subvert the everyday, and to play out their otherworldly inquiries into social-order absurdity, isolation, and existential anxiety. Coming up just as the world started taking note of the unique “Polish school of animation”, this crop of films proved an indelible influence on the proto-MTV generation of music videos and advertising — perhaps most recognizably in the works of titan Zbigniew Rybczynski, who, after winning an Oscar in 1982 for his time-collapsing Tango (screening here!), went on to direct mindbending promos for the likes of Yoko Ono and The Pet Shop Boys. We celebrate this peculiar, pioneering and intensely atmospheric animated epoch with a rare 35mm show that is a do-not-miss transportive experience; join us for this trip into a delectable dimension of animated otherness!
