Iris (4/30, special sneak preview!) w/ Bonus Screening of Advanced Style!

“A joyous celebration of creativity and razor-sharp wit sustained into old age, ‘Iris’ also offers proof of Albert Maysles’ continued vitality as a documentarian.” — Variety

From the director of Grey Gardens and Gimme Shelter! Iris pairs the late, legendary documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven whose outsized presence has graced the NYC fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, it’s a story about creativity, and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. This “rare bird of fashion,” as she is now known, first came to prominence in the 1950s when she and her husband Carl — who turned 100 during filming — founded Old World Weavers, a textile company hired by nine presidents for White House restorations. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. “I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.”
Dir. Albert Maysles, 2014, DCP, 83 min.

Advanced Style is a delightful, anti-ageist portrait of seven esoteric New Yorkers determined to keep their own style no matter the backlash.
“Each of the women featured{in Advanced Style} prove inspirational in their own way, be it through their rejection of ageist stereotyping, their seemingly limitless vitality or simply their vibrant individual personalities. More time could perhaps have been afforded to unearthing gems from their rich lives, but Plioplyte deserves credit for following her subjects into their natural habitat – the bustling New York streets – rather than sitting them down for a series of conventional talking head interviews. As one of the women explains, New York is a city best enjoyed on foot, which perhaps explains how these pioneering pensioners have managed to prolong the glory years well into their sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth decades.” – Daniel Green [Cinevue]Dir. Lina Plioplyte, 2014, DCP, 72 min.
