Originally commissioned for television and theatrical release, Fellini’s I Clowns is a lyrical, mischievous, self-aware blend of fiction and fantasy, wit and whimsy. This lament for the dying art of circus is a fascinating journey deep into the world of parades, performers, and clowns. Determined to keep I Clowns lighthearted and full of levity, Fellini presents a cast of characters in part designed to pay tribute to iconic clowns (including a touching Chaplin tribute) and their dying art form, while simultaneously poking fun at the great Il Mago’s critics–and, most importantly, himself. Replete with ravishing color and a melancholy score from Fellini-regular Nino Rota, this “minor Fellini” is rarely given its due as a defining piece of the Italian master’s filmography, leading to Amarcord just a few short years later.

Dir. Federico Fellini, 1970, digital presentation, 92 min.
