Greg Proops (one of the most mind-warpingly quick-draw improv comics on earth) records the latest episode of his monthly Film Club podcast live — and then it’s time for Curtis Hanson’s wonderful Wonder Boys. Greg sez: “Michael Douglas forgoes his usual typecasting as an asshole/businessman who gets his just desserts. Here, he is a stoned academic who wrote a promising first novel, but his complicated life and weed have made the second novel an unfinished 2,000-page opus. He is having an affair with the chancellor’s wife (Frances McDormand), losing his own wife, his in-laws hate him and his most promising student (Toby Maguire) is a brilliant, sociopathic liar. When his agent (Robert Downey, Jr.) comes to check on the book, all hell breaks loose. Panned critically back in 2000, and not originally a box office hit, this picture is what the Film Club is all about: great cast, terrific writing, a bunch of surprises and lots of dope smoking.” Adam Papagan (The Del Talk Show) will also be here to spin tunes before the show!
Dir. Curtis Hanson, 2000, 35mm, 107 min.

Q: Does Greg talk over the movies, like the Benson Interruption?
A: No. It is a recording of his podcast, followed by a screening of the film.
