The Doug Benson Movie Interruption

When you think “Doug Benson,” what do you think of? Movies (Doug Benson Loves Movies, being his popular podcast); interruptions (The Benson Interruption being his Comedy Central show, based upon his live stand-up-us interruptus at the UCB); and, of course, weed (this is the man who brought us Super High Me, after all). Some or all of these elements are bound to combine at Doug Benson’s Movie Interruption, where Doug and his friends (who, in the past, have included incredibly funny folks like Brian Posehn, Anthony Jeselnik, Tig Notaro, Ed Helms, Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis) chill on the front row couches, mics in hand, and say whatever hilarious thing pops into their heads while a movie of their choosing unfolds on the screen. So come check out their epic monthly hangout sesh, where the love of movies and interrupting, and maybe that third thing we can’t remember right this second, will have you chillin’, thrillin’ and rollin’ in the aisles. Make sure to follow Doug on Twitter!

dougbenson_oscars2014_website2
3/2/2014 - 3PM

This event is for Cinefamily members only +1. Before the show, Doug & co-host Karen Anderson will tape a new episode of the “Dining With Doug And Karen” podcast on the patio. This event is indeed a POTLUCK; things like bags of chips and drinks are not encouraged.

Please bring a dish (ones inspired by a Best Picture nominee are preferred) and impress Doug & Karen with your culinary chops as they sample everyone’s creations live on the podcast!

Potluck: 3:00-4:00pm
Red Carpet Interruption: 4:00-5:00pm
Awards Interruption: 5:00pm-?

Why watch the broadcast streaming on your desktop all by your lonesome, or in some seedy dive where the local reprobates are yammering over the sound of those bizarre musical numbers, when you can catch the whole shebang live at the Cinefamily, on the big screen, with the ULTIMATE reprobate yammering over the ENTIRE SHOW? Doug Benson, the King Of Interruption himself, will be at the Cinefamily alongside a selection of his impeccably selected guests chilling on the front row of couches, mics in hand, saying whatever hilarious things that pop into their heads while the awards madness unfolds. Doug will also be live-Tweeting throughout the show; follow him on Twitter @DougBenson!

To help us track attendance, you must pre-register for “first-come, first-serve” admission. Your registration does not guarantee you a seat.

This installment, Doug & Co. reach back into the deep crevices of the 2000s, and give to you Shadowboxer, one of the most unsung doses of cinematic unusuality the era has to offer. Cuba Gooding Jr., Helen Mirren, Macy Grey, Stephen Dorff, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mo’Nique, together again! The debut directorial effort from Lee Daniels (Precious, The Paperboy, The Butler), which packs a hell of a unusual whallop. Nathan Rabin, writing for the A.V. Club’s “My Year Of Flops”, sez: “The same fuck-the-world-I’m-doing-it-my-way bravery and cavalier disregard for commercial calculation that made Lee Daniels’ Precious (based on the novel Push by Sapphire) an unlikely pop-culture phenomenon similarly helped make the barely released, critically derided Shadowboxer: Not Based On A Novel By Sapphire, Daniels’ 2007 directorial debut, one of the craziest melodramas in recent years. It’s a film so unlikely, I almost wanted to watch it again just to make sure it wasn’t a weird dream.”
Dir. Lee Daniels, 2005, digital presentation, 93 min.

MEMBERS-ONLY POTLUCK: Awards-Watching Party (Interrupted by Doug Benson!)

A once-in-a-lifetime show!
oscars2012_newsite
2/26/2012 - 3PM

NOTE: This event is a Cinefamily members-only event — but members are allowed to bring a +1. As well, it is indeed a potluck; things like bags of chips and drinks are not encouraged — please bring a dish. Impress us! To sign up for membership, click here! We will also have a membership sign-up station at the box office on the day of the show.

The annual onslaught of film awards telecasts is like a multi-car pileup on the 405 — impossible to ignore, and teeming with celebrity carnage. And, of course, the biggest awards show of them all, the Super Bowl of moviedom, can be a blast in spite of its girth, given the right social setting. So why watch the broadcast streaming on your desktop all by your lonesome, or in some seedy dive where the local reprobates are yammering over the sound of those bizarre musical numbers, when you can catch the whole shebang live at the Cinefamily, on the big screen, with the ULTIMATE reprobate yammering over the ENTIRE SHOW! That’s right: Doug Benson, the King Of Interruption himself, will be at the Cinefamily alongside a selection of his impeccably selected guests chilling on the front row of couches, mics in hand, saying whatever hilarious things that pop into their heads while the awards madness unfolds. Come gossip with Doug & Co. about the gaudy fashions, share in their outrage when they just can’t believe how that film won, and join in their collective hearts being warmed by the underdog sweeping the whole thing when no one expected it!

The next installment of Doug Benson’s Movie Interruption, where Doug and his friends (who, in the past, have included everyone from Brian Posehn to Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis) chill on the front row couches, mics in hand, and say whatever hilarious thing pops into their heads while a movie of their choosing unfolds on the screen. The second of Doug’s two October horror selections: possibly the strangest Wes Craven film of all! A head-spinning sci-fi/horror hybrid, Deadly Friend sounds on paper like a mind-bogglingly convoluted Frankenstein-meets-Short Circuit-meets-John Hughes mishmash — and guess what, IT IS! And, man, it is quite a ride. Vacillating wildly from family-friendly teen comedy to gruesome R-rated gorefest, this is the elastic tale of Paul, a teen genius who pines for the girl next door (Kristy Swanson, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) — a girl that ends up braindead ‘cuz her abusive father pushed her down the stairs. Thanks to his extensive knowledge of cybernetics(!), Paul transplants the brain of his warm ‘n fuzzy homemade robot companion(!) into her body, breeding a superhuman corpulent killing machine!!!! Hunh? Exactly. Not only is Deadly Friend a total scream, but Doug & Co. have never had such a wide-open field of cinematic weirdness in which to quip away! DO NOT MISS THIS ONE.

For the first of two spooky October appearances, Doug & Co. tackle the toothy original 1985 version of Fright Night!
