Wayne Federman is a “That Guy”; we are subconsciously familiar with his face, burned into the vacuum tubes of our minds like an errant screensaver. Although his name may not be as familiar, trolling the communal id will reveal his patented one-scene “Federman-and-outs” in a slew of high-profile films: Legally Blonde, 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People, Step Brothers, 50 First Dates — plus substantial arcs in shows like X-Files. The Larry Sanders Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm. So when Wayne came to us with the novel idea for a film festival of repertory films curated by stand-up comedians — we were interested. When Wayne explained that the comedians would not only select films that were personally inspiring and influential to them, but would also intro the film, perform, and participate in a post-screening Q&A, we did what any right-thinking movie theater should do — we said YES. NOTE: Films and performers are subject to change…and, stay tuned for surprise special guests throughout the fest!

4TH INT'L WAYNE FEDERMAN FILM FEST: The Descent (presented by Kumail Nanjiani, filmmaker Neil Marshall in person!)

3/8/2015 - 10:30PM

JUST ADDED: The Descent filmmaker Neil Marshall in person! It’s no secret: Kumail Nanjiani — co-star of HBO’s Silicon Valley and co-host of Comedy Central’s The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail — is a horror film nut, a true-blue believer in the genre. After all, he’s the comedian who came up with the legendary “Horror fans are OK with the murder of innocent children, but not Freddy Krueger as a racist?” bit. He’s picked for us one of the most effective fright films of the 2000s, and arguably the best cave-horror movie of all time: Neil Marshall’s The Descent, which has been solidly scaring the shit out audiences for almost ten years with its nerve-shattering suspense and teeth-clenching claustrophobia. Receiving a shower of resounding, well-deserved accolades from the horror fan community upon its original release, Marshall’s gory sophomore effort (his follow-up to the equally rad Dog Soldiers) put the British director on the map as a powerful voice in genre cinema. By employing an all-female cast of cave explorers looking for kicks, the film elicits genuine sympathy from the viewer without ever feeling like a gimmick — a rare feat from a modern horror film.
Dir. Neil Marshall, 2005, 35mm, 99 min.

4TH INT'L WAYNE FEDERMAN FILM FEST: Big (presented by Lauren Lapkus)

3/8/2015 - 7:30PM

Screening presented by Lauren Lapkus (Orange Is The New Black)! Goofy, floppy-haired and disarmingly charming, Tom Hanks delighted us in the ‘80s with a series of happy-go-lucky filmic adventures, all displaying a whimsical giddiness that’s still impossible to resist — with Big being possibly the most seminal and timeless. In the grand tradition of the era’s plentiful “switch” comedies, Big finds Hanks starting off as a 12-year-old who, after a visit to a mystical carnival attraction, magically transforms into an adult who accidentally snags a dream job at a Manhattan toy company. Hanks, co-stars Robert Loggia and Elizabeth Perkins, and director Penny Marshall manage to turn what could’ve been a cornball concept into a moving meditation on love, friendship and the loss of innocence. It’s a testament to them all that, somehow, even when the “adolescent in the adult body” begins a romance with Perkins’ unwitting, ultimate-cougar co-worker, it makes you feel warm ‘n fuzzy, rather than damp ‘n grody. An unexpected, rare female-helmed Hollywood blockbuster, and a movie that reminds us that we’re all kids at heart.
Dir. Penny Marshall, 1988, DCP, 104 min.

4TH INT'L WAYNE FEDERMAN FILM FEST: MacGruber (encore, presented by Will Forte!) NOTE: 12:45AM SHOWTIME

3/7/2015 - MIDNITE

Will Forte spent eight seasons on Saturday Night Live building a portfolio of unforgettably offbeat personalities, all of them fiercely committed to the same brilliantly lionhearted witlessness. And, amongst all the sketch comedy, he’s also had a thriving career acting and writing (including the brand-new show The Last Man On Earth), always making us laugh. Maybe hardest in MacGruber. Only one operative has been awarded 16 Purple Hearts, and only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In the ten years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands — until a villainous Val Kilmer steps into the picture. It’s not easy making every obscenely crude moment hysterical in a “Why is this working so well?” type of way, but Forte and his director (Jorma Taccone, of the Lonely Island comedy troupe) keep this baby Airplane!-paced.
Dir. Jorma Taccone, 2010, DCP, 90 min.

4TH INT'L WAYNE FEDERMAN FILM FEST: Fletch (presented by Chris Hardwick)

chrishardwick_website
3/7/2015 - 7PM

Chris Hardwick is a master at wearing a multitude of hats: he’s the head honcho of Nerdist, the host of “The Talking Dead” and “Talking Bad” in the podcast world, the ringleader of @ Midnight on the tube, and a diehard dynamo in the stand-up world. Fletch, the titular hero of the 1985 classic as brilliantly and effortlessly inhabited by Chevy Chase, is an investigative reporter who, along the way, impersonates a vagabond junkie, airplane repairman, surgeon’s assistant, and hoity-toity country club member. Is this multitude of personality a coincidence? Yeah, probably — but Chase nails so many silly bits and off-the-cuff moments that Fletch is elevated from what could’ve been a routine thriller into one of its era’s secret comedy legends. Chris done chose good.
Dir. Michael Ritchie, 1985, 35mm, 98 min.

4TH INT'L WAYNE FEDERMAN FILM FEST: Ghostbusters (presented by Paul Scheer)

3/6/2015 - 10:30PM

When you’re the co-creator of Human Giant, you have the right to be regarded as one of the best of the underground. When you’ve been in every hit comedy show from The League to 30 Rock, however, you’re a patron saint of everything now. Paul Scheer can say he’s both; irreverent, surreal, and impeccably hilarious, his career reads like the what’s-what of the American funny bone for the past 15 years. It’s only right then that he present the towering classic Ghostbusters for Cinefamily because, well, smart recognizes smart: there’s pretty much nothing better than the combination of Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray fighting the most impressive supernatural foes in one of the best horror-comedies ever.
Dir. Ivan Reitman, 1984, 35mm, 105 min.

For the next Doug Benson Movie Interruption, it’s a special Wayne Federman Int’l Film Fest edition — one where Doug, along with Wayne and other friends (who, in the past, have included everyone from Paul F. Tompkins to Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis), will chill on the front row couches, mics in hand, and say whatever hilarious thing pops into their heads while a movie of their choosing unfolds on the screen.

4TH INT'L WAYNE FEDERMAN FILM FEST: Klown (presented by Sacha Baron Cohen)

3/5/2015 - 7:30PM

“HANDS DOWN THE FUNNIEST FILM OF THE YEAR…Plays like a superior, and way grosser, version of ‘The Hangover’.” — Aaron Hillis, The Village Voice

In a giddy, debaucherous Scandinavian NC-17-flavored take on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Klown (based upon the popular long-running TV show of the same name) follows two wildly inappropriate friends (internationally celebrated comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen) as they run amok through the Danish countryside, plowing through social taboos and unspeakable degeneracy. The odd couple pals have opposing agendas for their upcoming camping trip: Casper is determined to visit a mysterious world-renowned brothel as the final stop on his “Tour de Pussy,” while Frank, attempting to prove his fatherhood potential to his girlfriends kidnaps his nephew to join them. As these confrontational and consistently unpredictable Dogme-95-meets-the-Farrelly-Brothers plotlines collide, Klown will leave you hurting from nonstop laugh fits and genuinely shocked by several denouements you’ll never have seen coming. When we screened Klown a couple years ago, it received some of the most prolonged, intense outbursts of audience laughter we’ve ever clocked. Sacha Baron Cohen will appear in person to present the film!
Dir. Mikkel Nørgaard, 2010, DCP, 93 min.
