“A guy I knew who used to have arguments with his shoe. He was amazing. He was always trying to give his shoe good advice. Once he fell asleep on the train and someone stole his shoes off his feet. He was never the same after that.” — Harmony Korine, on the inspiration for his chapter in “The Fourth Dimension”

It’s the brand-new anthology film from VICE and Grolsch Film Works! Three visionary filmmakers — Russia’s Alexy Fedorchenko, America’s Harmony Korine and Poland’s Jan Kwiecinski — have created unique stories representing the higher plane of existence known as the Fourth Dimension. Through interpretations of the idiosyncratic creative brief laid down by VICE Films’ executive director Eddy Moretti (featuring such instructions as “We must never know the truth”, “Someone must sing a song that is completely made up”, “We need to see things that are secret to most” and “You cannot fail”), we are given a glimpse of enlightenment through the eyes of one-of-a-kind characters each on a journey that changes the way they see the world and themselves. Whether it’s through Val Kilmer’s perception-challenging American motivational speaker, through a Russian time machine inventor’s pursuits or through a Polish tribe of youngsters searching for meaning in a deserted ghost town, The Fourth Dimension broadens your cinematic mind, giving you the tools to pave your own enlightened path. Co-director Jan Kwiecinski will be here at the Cinefamily for a Q&A after the film!

Dogtooth

An absolute CInefamily favorite!
dogtooth_website
9/22/2012 - MIDNITE

In celebration of our one-week run of Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film Alps, we’re bringing back Dogtooth for a special one-time-only midnight show! Combining the gripping, unpredictable tension of a prime Polanski thriller, the perfectly-executed production design of a Wes Anderson contraption and the freaky-deaky blackly comic absurdity of a David Lynch nightmare, Dogtooth is easily one of the most unique filmic creations of the last few years. On par with Antichrist and Enter The Void for sheer audacity, this intoxicating mixture of physical violence and verbal comedy is the story of three teens perpetually confined to their parents’ isolated estate, and kept under strict rule and regimen — an inscrutable scenario suggesting a warped experiment in social conditioning. Fully utilizing every last inch of onscreen space, Lanthimos paints the blackest of portraits with austere, antiseptic visuals, and elicits a total warped commitment from his entire cast — thus indelibly immersing you into a claustrophobic emotional netherworld never before seen.

FREE SNEAK PREVIEW: Fat Kid Rules The World (director Matthew Lillard in person!)

Matthew Lillard in person!

9/11/2012 - 7:30PM

NOTE: This show is free (first-come, first-serve). To help us track attendance and limit waiting line size, you must pre-register for “first-come, first-serve” admission. One registration per person. No one will be admitted after the film has begun.

Coming off of a remarkable, vulnerable breakout performance in last year’s Sundance hit Terri, a young Jacob Wysocki gives an equally fantastic, nuanced lead turn in Fat Kid Rules The World, the brand-new portrait of uneasy teen friendship and rock ‘n roll blossoming. Wysocki is Troy, an obese misfit whose suicide attempt is thwarted by Marcus, an impulsive, drug-addled dropout. After they awkwardly bond over their respective anti-social behaviors, the increasingly out-of-control Marcus pushes Troy into being the drummer in his new punk band — but is either of them ready for the consequences of their self-destructive relationship? Helmed by Matthew Lillard (star of SLC Punk, Scooby-Doo and Without A Paddle), who makes a striking debut in the director’s chair, Fat Kid gives the satisfying feeling that only the best coming-of-age novel or Afterschool Special can deliver: a nakedly honest portrait of adolescence that sticks in your craw long after the credits roll, and that synthesizes with your memories of your own childhood in a painfully real way. Matthew Lillard will be at the Cinefamily in person for a Q&A after the film!
Dir. Matthew Lillard, 2012, 94 min.
