The Tingler (Presented in "Percepto"!)

10/31/2015 - 5PM

Live set by DJ Mean Mr. Mustard!

Cinefamily presents our favorite annual Halloween tradition: the spine-tingling horror of The Tingler, William Castle’s weirdo masterpiece of gimmickry about a lobster-shaped monster that feeds on terror within the human body! Aside from being the first film to use LSD as a plot device, the original theatrical run was presented in “Percepto,” whereby theater patrons were administered buzzer shocks in their seats, to simulate the monster’s attack. The result, of course, was giddy insanity, as star Vincent Price’s voice urges patrons to “scream for your lives!” As if that wasn’t enough, The Tingler features a major subplot based on our very own Silent Movie Theatre and its original owners, the Hamptons. Feel a tingle up your spine as you watch these scenes set in the very location where you are sitting—and maybe a tingle on your tuchas when we shock you Castle-style with real wired seats!

Dir. William Castle, 1959, DCP, 82 min.

Our unceasing countdown to Halloween continues with this special free screening of Colin Hardy’s The Hallow, a terrifying new Irish horror film, presented by English director and fan of the film Edgar Wright! This one really is a perfect precursor to all hallow’s eve, a visceral creature feature with a classic premise: young couple and baby move to a new house in an idyllic yet foreboding remote locale. Hardy takes the genre to sybaritic extremes, building a terrifying world rife with nightmarish fiends, and steeped in masterfully sustained suspense. For horror lovers, Hardy’s “palpable fanboy glee” is infectious, inspiring trepidation, dread, and pure horror in all the right places.

OCCULT LA: Season of the Witch - How the Occult Saved Rock 'N Roll (w/ a special screening of Performance)

performance_480_309
10/21/2015 - 7:30PM

Presented by Jodi Wille (Dir. of The Source Family)

Occult LA is baaaack! Join us for a Samhain special featuring Peter Bebergal, author of the acclaimed book SEASON OF THE WITCH: HOW THE OCCULT SAVED ROCK AND ROLL, and a rarely seen 35mm screening of the legendary occult rock classic Performance (1970) starring Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg!

Through a specially-curated program of iconic and obscure music videos, stills, shorts, and film clips Bebergal will illuminate a secret occult history of rock ‘n’ roll, from Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Arthur Brown and Hawkwind to Psychic TV, SunnO)) and Jay-Z—all who owe their mystique to occultists like Aubrey Beardsley, Aleister Crowley, Madame Blavatsky, and others as well as to the pomp and pageantry of secret brotherhoods and neo-pagans. Clips include hoodoo spirituals, an occult-themed Pepsi commercial, a never-before-shown Source Family/YaHoWha 13 public-access TV performance, and moments from films like The Devil Rides Out, The Song Remains the Same, and more, to show how this spiritual rebellion crafted rock’s mythic soul and radically transformed backbeat music into a force of cultural revolution and political, spiritual, sexual, and social liberation.

After Performance, join us on the patio for Peter’s book signing and a Samhain celebration with “magical” (non-psychedelic) reishi mushroom tea!

Dirs. Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell, 1970, 35mm, 105 mins.

10/20/2015 - 7:30PM

Come catch Christopher Walken—in what is surely his only portrayal of an evil angel (sporting a very shiny hairdo)—in The Prophecy. This bizarre and engrossing mash-up of fantasy and thriller—“basically a spy thriller with angels instead of agents” (Variety)—is a strange and magical relic from 1995, dubbed an “occult freakshow” (Entertainment Weekly), and complete with a cult following. This is one of those weird and wonderfully inexplicable movies, so for those of you who aren’t sold already, just trust us. Plus, Gregory Widen (Writer, Director, and Creator) and star Adam Goldberg will be joining us at this screening!!

Dir. Gregory Widen, 1995, 35mm, 98 min.

June Carter and Johnny Cash
10/6/2015 - 7:30PM

The Winding Stream is a story about the family at the heart of American roots music—The Carters and Cashes. Starting with the Original Carter Family—A.P., Sara and Maybelle—the film traces the trio’s early musical success, the transformation of the act into The Carter Sisters, June Carter’s marriage to legend Johnny Cash, and the efforts of the present-day Carter family to keep the music alive. Part history, part performance, part family saga, the film illuminates the Carter’s musical and cultural contributions and features a who’s who of Americana music including Johnny Cash, George Jones, Rosanne Cash, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Sheryl Crow, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, and more. Includes a compelling appearance by Johnny Cash in one of his last interviews.
