Hardware (35mm encore, Richard Stanley & cast/crew in person!)

3/25/2015 - 7:30PM

In case you weren’t able to come out to our Richard Stanley double bill earlier in the month, we’re bringing back Richard’s personal 35mm print of Hardware — the lone extant print of the uncut version — for one more show. Plus, Richard, star Stacey Travis and DP Steve Chivers in person! “What really makes the film is the style; Hardware is a film you’ll absolutely never forget. Each scene features strong, impressive imagery, right from the haunting opening shot of a coated, masked scavenger trudging through the orange sand. Even the soundtrack pulses with a terrific Simon Boswell score, and perfect song contributions from Public Image Ltd. and Ministry. Even Iggy Pop and Motorhead’s Lemmy pop up! The film also represents a delirious example of how much fun sci-fi could be when it wasn’t afraid to splash the screen in blood; while the first half is deliberately paced and the very definition of a slow burner, the payoff is a riotous string of grisly death scenes and wild hallucinogenic sequences that fuse together in the striking finale.” (Mondo Digital)
Dir. Richard Stanley, 1990, 35mm.

Show & Tell w/ Richard Stanley

showandtell_richardstanley_website1
3/21/2015 - 8PM

Filmmaker/raconteur/historian Richard Stanley is best known for the narrative films Hardware and Dust Devil, as well as the story behind the debacle of The Island of Dr. Moreau (documented in 2014’s Lost Soul.) Yet the true stories of both Stanley’s life and his lesser-known documentaries rival any of the fictional tales he’s told. Brought up by an anthropologist mother in South Africa, Stanley grew up amongst indigenous tribes and sorcerers as his mother studied their witchcraft practices and folklore. Much like how Jodorowsky was left unable to make another feature after Santa Sangre, Stanley left Hollywood after Moreau but kept working by diving deeply into his passions of the occult and esoterica, misunderstood cultures and anthropology — at times living for several months amongst Afghani jihadists, Haitian voodoo priests (both white and black), esoteric Nazis, and the neo-Cathars and warlocks of the tiny village of Montesegur, France, where he lives now.

Come tonight to hear these stories, watch clips from Stanley’s extraordinary documentaries and his entire film on Haitian voodoo, The White Darkness (2002) — and see how Richard is the closest thing we have to a Jodorowsky or Herzog of his generation.

Island of Lost Souls (1932)

3/20/2015 - 9:45PM

With an introduction by filmmaker Richard Stanley!
This macabre, silvery jungle fantasy — the very first talkie based on H.G. Wells’ immortal novel The Island of Dr. Moreau — plays like it fell right out of the pulps, and it practically did; co-scripter Philip Wylie was a science fiction legend whose writing directly inspired Flash Gordon. Charles Laughton’s Moreau is an evil cherub, deliciously disgusting as he quips with erudite self-enjoyment about things like cannibalism, and cutting his pets open while they’re still alive so he can rearrange their organs (remember, this was still in the thick of the “pre-Code” early Thirties, when the Movies could be lurid without much consequence.) Other luminaries on board include cinematographer Karl Struss and art director Hans Dreier, maestros of light and shadow who respectively won Oscars for Sunrise and Sunset Boulevard. The doctor performs “creative” surgeries, without anesthetics. The soundtrack is often silence punctuated by intermittent subhuman screaming. Even Bela Lugosi gets extra freaky! Witness a true horror classic.
Dir. Erle C. Kenton, 1932, 35mm, 70 min.

The Devil's Photographer: William Mortensen and Hollywood (feat. "West of Zanzibar")

devilsphotographer_website
3/12/2015 - 7:30PM

Co-presented by FERAL HOUSE

Live musical score by regular Cinefamily accompanist Cliff Retallick. The evening includes an intro and book signing by author Larry Lytle and an exhibition of previously unseen William Mortenson prints/artifacts on the back patio!

To celebrate the rediscovery of the transgressive and groundbreaking photographer William Mortenson through the release of two new Feral House books (Command to Look and American Grotesque), it’s an evening honoring the strange legacy of the artist Ansel Adams called “The Antichrist,” along with a special 35mm screening of the creepy-crazy Lon Chaney gem West of Zanzibar. With young actress Fay Wray (King Kong) under his wing, Mortensen began his career shooting portraits of leading screen stars, and collaborating with directors Cecil B. DeMille and Tod Browning. Using radical photo techniques that prefigure the digital age, Mortensen created wild images of the occult, horror, beasts and human monstrosities, along with sensuous nudes and character studies. The unholy trinity of Chaney, Browning and Mortenson combined their visions of the grotesque to create the Pre-Code West of Zanzibar, one of the most bizarre silent features ever filmed: a wild-spirited, deliciously convoluted jungle revenge picture, with Chaney as a legless man with a twenty-year settle to score.
West of Zanzibar Dir. Tod Browning, 1928, 35mm, 65 min.

Everything Is Terrible! Legends (10:15pm show)

eit_legends_480_309
3/11/2015 - 10:15PM

Once a millenium, something emerges from the darkest corner of the universe and enlightens us to the true meaning of being. Something so mystickal, so magickal, and so mind-splitting that all concepts before its existence sounds stupid and boring. Of course, we are talking about Everything Is Terrible! The Legends show is a culmination of the first seven (of 777) years of work from the video alchemists at EIT! These mindfreaks have taken thousands of forgotten VHS tapes, chewed them up, and spit them back to their young via daily website postings, six movies, and world tours. In that time, they’ve exposed us to wonders such as massaging cat ladies, apocalyptic facial exercises, pizzas parties in hell, and our immortal party-god, Duane. Nobody could have predicted the cultural, psychological, and illuminating impact EIT! would have on our consciousness, but seeing all their greatest works chronicled in one place reminds us that in the right hands, garbage can be turned into gold! It is time pack up your copies of Jerry Maguire and accept the fact that your life up until this moment has been pointless.

Filmmaker David Robert Mitchell in person! After a highly successful jaunt on the festival circuit (including Toronto, Sundance and AFI Fest), the indie horror smash It Follows is a breath of fresh, tense air, with a constantly-turning Rubik’s Cube conceit that we couldn’t get enough of. “Stuck with a sexually transmitted serial haunting after a romantic night out, a beautiful nineteen year-old finds herself pursued by a legion of malevolent, lumbering phantoms that will pursue her forever — unless she passes the curse onto someone else. In the light of day she is stalked, attacked by half-naked figures that none of her friends can see. These apparitions are driven by a single desire: to see her dead. Director Mitchell handles teenage sexuality in a non-exploitative and sensitive manner, allowing his characters to make sympathetic choices, yet maintains a chilling atmosphere of dread and suspense amidst the decaying suburbs of Detroit, creating a relentless and deeply creepy monster chase that culminates in a fresh and freaky final showdown.” — Toronto Int’l Film Festival

“Madcap murder mystery meets razor-sharp relationship comedy in this witty update on the detective movie — think Nancy Drew and her boyfriend run amok in present-day Brooklyn. Husband and wife filmmaking team Sophia Takal and director Lawrence Michael Levine (Gabi on the Roof in July) star as recently engaged but perpetually bickering couple Barri and Noah. When their elderly downstairs neighbor suddenly kicks the bucket, the flighty Barri immediately suspects foul play. Cue a harebrained investigation as Barri — outfitted in a Columbo-style trench coat—enlists her secretly-in-love-with-her lesbian roommate (Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat) to help her get to the bottom of the matter. Parenthood’s Jason Ritter co-stars in this screwball whodunit, which crackles with zingy one-liners, a brassy retro score, and real romantic tension.” (Denver Film Festival) Sophia Takal & Lawrence Michael Levine in person!
