Birdemic Fest ("Birdemic" & sneak peek at "Birdemic 2"!)
The impossible has just become a reality! Birdemic: Shock And Terror auteur James Nguyen is in the middle of shooting a sequel: Birdemic II: The Resurrection 3D. Join Mr. Nguyen as he presents exclusive footage from the sequel, and stick around for a Q&A with James and cast members after our anniversary screening of Birdemic: Shock and Terror! The most discussed and anticipated avian-based disaster film since the The Birds, Birdemic: Shock And Terror is equal parts epochal tale and cinematic warning shot. It tells the story of a couple unexpectedly and unforgettably caught in the eye of a feather-based storm — an apocalyptic attack winging down from the skies in a twisted morass of feathers, talons and blood-soaked claws. And the man that fired the shot across the diegetic bow of cineastes everywhere? That would be writer/director/dream factory foreman James Nguyen. One of cinema’s most persistent imagineers, Nguyen (legally trademarked as “The Master of the Romantic Thriller”™) funded his masterwork with savings accrued from his day job as a Silicon Valley software salesman. No less than five years in the making, Birdemic stands as a testament to Nguyen’s dark, enduring vision.

The FP (L.A. premiere party, cast/crew in person!)
Fraiser Park: an alternate trailer trash dimension out of time and space. Within these county lines, a Dance-Dance-Revolution-inspired dystopian underground prevails — only, in this game, losing can be fatal. The dumpster lovechild of Mad Max, Idiocracy and Footloose, The FP weaves a harrowing tale of bros, hos, and fancy footwork. After the tragic “dirt nap” (i.e. death) of his beloved bro, JTRO thinks he’s out of the game for good — but when a turf war threatens to rip the town apart, it’s up to our hero to set shit straight once again in an ultimate montage-loving battle for vengeance, until only one man is left dancing. With an epic 1980s John Carpenter-meets-JPop soundtrack, gratuitous nudity, and a flurry of neon streetwear, this film is going to blow your brain, for reals. Directors Brandon and Jason Trost, as well as other cast/crew members, will be here at the Cinefamily to introduce the film, and for a Q&A afterwards. Plus, stick around for our post-screening afterparty on the Cinefamily Spanish patio!
Dirs. Brandon & Jason Trost, 2011, HDCAM, 83 min.

Animation Breakdown: Harry Smith's "Heaven And Earth Magic" (w/ original audio)
“One of the greatest films of all time.” – John Zorn
Both a heady milestone in low-budget folk animation and a glimpse into the clip-art mindscape of one of America’s most legendary culture hounds, Harry Smith’s Heaven and Earth Magic is an unforgettable animated experience of watermelons, dentistry, and heavenly ascension. Smith’s black-and-white opus of a collage film elevates 19th-century graphic imagery with both a loony dream-logic disregard for laws of physics (Terry Gilliam fans, take note) and a poetic sense of metaphor. For this early evening screening, we’ll meditate on the definitive cut with its original sound-effects-only audio track.
Dir. Harry Smith, 1957-1962, 16mm, 66 min.
Animation Breakdown: Harry Smith's "Heaven And Earth Magic" (live score by Flying Lotus!)
Reprising an unforgettable show commissioned for the Ann Arbor Film Festival, L.A.’s own Flying Lotus joins Animation Breakdown for a unique screening of animator/folk music archivist/string figure enthusiast/culture hound extraordinaire Harry Smith’s 66-minute animated collage film Heaven and Earth Magic. The marriage of Smith’s ‘50s folk art mindset and Flying Lotus’ genre-defying 21st century sound may seem at odds, but they are both equally brilliant alchemical cut-and-paste samplers of world culture — and as kindred as spirits can get. Heaven and Earth Magic is a testament to the ability of animators to act as magicians, breathing life into even the most static, eyeworn 19th-century imagery — and as Flying Lotus contributes audio from disparate yet familiar sources (drum machine, turntable, laptop, synthesizer), two giants of sampling unite across time, and Smith’s playful experiments are imbued with a new, positively cosmic energy. This is one-of-a-kind live pairing you are not likely to see again!
Heaven and Earth Magic Dir. Harry Smith, 1957-1962, 16mm, 66 min.
