12/18/2011 - 1PM

After our Telethon draws to a close, we have a very special thank-you planned for all of our newest Cinefamily members, as well as those current members who’ve renewed their support: an encore presentation of one of the most popular and incredibly fun shows Cinefamily has ever done, hosted by Michael Cera, and followed by a Members-Only Luncheon courtesy of The Foundry on Melrose!

Admission to this event is RSVP-only — no +1s, unless the person accompaning you is also a new or renewing Cinefamily member. To RSVP (or for any questions), please email mya@cinefamily.org. We look forward to another amazing year with you!

A mind-blowing collection of shorts, crazy commercials, and other rarities from the Jim Henson vault, hosted by special guest Michael Cera! Highlights include: an industrial film for Wilson’s Meat that must be seen to be believed; commercials featuring the LaChoy Dragon (a full-body character that caused Frank Oz to swear off doing any others); animation utilizing techniques ranging from stop-motion to early computer animation; excerpts from The Cube and Youth 68 (the two episodes Jim and company created for NBC’s Experiment in Television); and, a 35mm print of Time Piece, an Oscar-nominated 8-minute masterpiece that showcases Henson’s talent for making music out of everyday sounds. Every single time we’ve shown this extraordinary program, our house has been packed to the rafters, so be sure to arrive early for this one-of-a-kind event!

“Muppets™, Music & Magic: Jim Henson’s Legacy” retrospective is produced by The Jim Henson Legacy and Brooklyn Academy of Music. TM and © Muppets Holding Company, LLC, TM & © Sesame Workshop, TM & © The Jim Henson Company

Independent film maverick. Trailblazing writer/director who takes chances with style and script. Inspirational humanist. Box-office success. Are we talking an Indie filmmaker from the 1970s or 1990s? No — Roger Corman!  While known for working fast (with some of his films made in a mere two days) and wallowing in the B-movie world of monsters, bad special effects, schlocky acting, and plentiful nudity, Corman is also a respected rebel of cinema, dealing with hot-button social topics like race and feminism, and having created his own production and distribution company (tagging it “America’s Biggest Independent.” ) Plus, he also taught the next generation of film greats, including everyone from Coppola, Scorsese and Demme to even Ron Howard. From Corman’s first feature in 1955 to the set of his new film Dinoshark, this entertaining documentary has all the blood and guts of the artist’s lurid and fascinating career, with essential insights from contemporaries and students.  Learn the roots of American indie filmmaking, laced with boobs and violence! After the film, join us for a Q&A with director Alex Stapleton and other special guests!
Dir. Alex Stapleton, 2011, 35mm, 101 min.
