ANIMATION BREAKDOWN: Masters of Polish Animation (w/ live score by Polish supergroup Baaba!)

4/29/2012 - 8PM
Co-presented by the Polish Cultural Institute New York & UNSOUND NEW YORK Festival

Bizarre, beautiful, densely symbolic and darkly satiric — Polish animation speaks a language undeniably its own. Drawing from a rich history of avant-garde design, surrealist literature and puppet mastery, disillusioned post-war Poles responded to the bleak absurdities of their landscape by re-sculpting the familiar into twisted unrealities, and eschewing traditional narratives for abstracted and ironic allegory. With a breathtakingly diverse range of techniques, their massively influential creations stand as fiercely fantastical and distinctly unique artistic marvels. So great is Cinefamily’s love of Polish animation that we programmed an entire mini-retro of it for our inaugural Animation Breakdown festival back in December, merely dipping our toes in the bottomless pool of awesome shorts. And, when we heard that Warsaw-based prog-jazz supergroup Baaba were bringing their unique set of live scores to our shores, we leapt at the chance to dive back in! Blending jazz, rock, electronica, and funk, Baaba re-imagines soundtracks to an exquisite selection of films from such masters as Jan Lenica, Walerian Borowczyk and Zbigniew Rybczynski — all in gorgeous n’ rare 35mm prints direct from Poland!

Featured shorts include:
Once Upon a Time There Was… / Był sobie raz… dir. Walerian Borowczyk & Jan Lenica, 1957, 9”
Banner of the Youth / Sztandar młodych dir. Walerian Borowczyk, 1958, 2’11”
New Book / Nowa książka, dir. Zbigniew Rybczynski, 1975, 10’
The Changing of the Guard / Zmiana warty, dir. Włodzimierz Haupe, Halina Bielińska, 1958, 8” (Cannes ’59)
Stairs / Schody, dir. Stefan Schabenbeck, 1968, 7’13”
The Cat and the Mouse / Myszka i kotek, dir. Władysław Nehrebecki, 1958, 8’30”

Cinefama Pajama Party: Girlfriends!

Director Claudia Weill in person!
4/14/2012 - 10:15PM

Let’s be real here for a minute, ladies. We have all had that one friendship: the one that started in kindergarten with the sharing of a Hostess cupcake, the one between you and the college roommate you really connected with, or the one with the bestie you met last year (but whom you felt you’d known forever.) Join us for a pajama-rama celebrating best gals, featuring Claudia Weill’s Girlfriends, the groundbreaking ‘70s slice of single-lady downtown NYC life starring Melanie Myron (“thirtysomething”), Bob Balaban and Christopher Guest! Touching on some of the more complicated parts of lady friendship, Girlfriends has been praised by Tiny Furniture director/star Lena Dunham for its “complex relationships, the subtlety, the odd comedy that was awkward long before awkward was cool.” So bring your best friend, your bestie’s bestie, your mom, your best friend’s mom and YOUR MOM’S BEST FRIEND! This is really a movie for girlfriends to watch together, so come watch it with us — and join us on the Cinefama Pajama-style back patio with a bar, DJ, and dance party! Because, really, what’s better than tossing a few back and dancing your heart out with your BFF? Girlfriends writer/director Claudia Weill will be here for a Q&A after the screening!

Dir. Claudia Weill, 1978, 35mm, 86 min. (Archival 35mm print courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection)

Pheromone Party! (feat. "The Naked Ape")

An adventurous scientific love-in!
4/5/2012 - 8PM
Co-presented by Dublab & Mastodon Mesa

TICKETS – $30 general admission, $25 LACMA Muse & Dublab members, $15 Cinefamily members. We are unfortunately not able to offer Cinefamily members free admission to this event.

To join us for this adventurous love-in, attendees must bring a white cotton T-shirt that has been slept in for 3 consecutive nights without washing (the T-shirt, not you. You can wash!) For full instructions, visit the Pheromone Party website!

Online dating. Speed dating. The ways we meet people nowadays can feel more like a job interview than falling in love, and none of it makes a very good story for the grandkids. That’s why artist Judith Pray’s Pheromone Party caught our eye. She’s taking it back to basics — the real basics: most animals choose their mates by the scent of special sexual chemicals called pheromones, and there’s evidence humans (subconsciously) may too. With the Pheromone Party, it’s all about a system of anonymous t-shirt sniffing (scientific advisor: Charles J. Wysocki, PhD. of the Monell Chemical Senses Center), and based on a famous experiment on odor and attraction, it will link you up with potential new lovers. Finally, a singles event with no bullshit, no mind games, no judgement, nothing but pure chemistry — and the best part is, anyone who doesn’t have a lot of confidence, a keen intellect, a strong sense of humor and a love for art and adventure — won’t be brave enough to come. After the Pheromone Party, join us for a 35mm screening of The Naked Ape, the groovy early-’70s softcore feature film produced by Playboy, and based on the wildly popular pop-zoology tome of the same name — plus, Dublab’s DJ Frosty will be here to spin tunes throughout the evening!
The Naked Ape Dir. Donald Driver, 1973, 35mm, 85 min.
