11/27/2016 - 8PM

Cinefamily Show & Tell invites artists, filmmakers, musicians and other cultural heroes to divulge their deepest, darkest media obsessions by opening their closets, digging through their attic and plundering their garages to curate an evening of… whatever they want to share! This edition brings comedian-writer-producer-performer Dino Stamatopoulos to the Cinefamily stage! From acting on NBC’s Community, to writing for Conan O’Brien and Mr. Show, and creating Moral Orel and Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole, Dino’s had a robust career—to say the least. Join Dino and his band SORRY ABOUT EVERYTHING for a night of storytelling, music, and embarrassing videos made in the late 80s and early 90s.

JUST ADDED: Andy Dick will be joining Dino! The two have been friends and collaborators since their early days in Chicago, and created the podcast Dino and Andy’s Skull Juice.

SHOW & TELL: Daniel Johnston

Cinefamily Show & Tell invites artists, filmmakers, musicians and other cultural heroes to divulge their deepest, darkest media obsessions by opening their closets, digging through their attic and plundering their garages to curate an evening of… whatever they want to share! From thrift store finds to late-night Tivo, from foreign film bootlegs to home movies, from the popular to the perverse — all media will be presented live by the honored guests, as they take us on a personal tour of the audio, video and other ephemera that has inspired them, delighted them, or just plain freaked them out.

This edition brings beloved cult musician Daniel Johnston to Cinefamily! Long before The Devil and Daniel Johnston brought Daniel’s story to the mainstream, he played clubs and records stores in Austin and wandered the streets giving out his homemade cassette tapes, their fidelity wrecked through generations of duplication. Only a few people documented his performances with the then-pricey tools available at the time. One of those people was Daniel’s friend Marie Javins, an intern at the Austin Chronicle who stopped by to see Daniel after his famed 1987 breakdown. Now, almost 30 years later and with Daniel’s permission, we’ve unearthed this footage to share alongside unreleased home videos, Daniel’s favorite cartoons (including his frequent inspiration, Casper), and a whole host of surprises for completist Johnston fanatics, in celebration of an eclectic, productive career!

EIF: Show & Tell - Mike Judge's "Judgemental Sampler"

Mike Judge in person!

8/16/2013 - 10PM

While the name Mike Judge has long been synonymous with comedy genius and game-changing animation, few have given him his due as a titan of found footage collecting, and we’re honored to help rectify this gross injustice. Join us as we kneel humbly before the beloved creator of Office Space, Idiocracy, and King of the Hill for a rare public screening of his “Judgemental Sampler,” the legendary mixtape of found footage madness circulated amongst Mike’s closest friends for years. In every subtly edited clip, the personality that spawned Beavis and Butt-head clearly shines through, busting guts and blowing minds with the trademark Judge blend of cultural satire. An epic closet-rummaging with the host of Disinformation!

9/13/2011 - 8PM

For September’s session, we’re thrilled to present a friend who is not only a true warrior collector of amazing one-of-a-kind artifacts, but also a fantastic chronicler of hidden underground culture: Richard Metzger, creator of Dangerous Minds and co-creator of Disinformation! Simply put, Richard’s one of the world’s foremost experts on all things counterculture, conspiratorial and just plain crazy. From a childhood in West Virginia spent obsessively digging through libraries (“There wasn’t a whole lot to do except to tip cows and to read”), to a grown-up era of showcasing the work of folks he respects and admires on TV (Disinformation), in blogland (DangerousMinds.com) and in print (“Everything You Know Is Wrong”), Richard’s amassed a personal archive that overflows with impossibly cool items. This evening will be a closet-rummaging bonanza, as Richard shows you everything from his incredible archival print materials to priceless time capsule footage of the groundbreaking ‘80s NYC club scene (of which he was a part!) Plus, join us for excerpts of Richard’s music video work, highlights from the Disinformation TV show, and so much more!

Show & Tell w/ Miranda July!

7/26/2011 - 8PM

For our very first Show & Tell, we’ve chosen filmmaker/author/performance artist/all-around fascinating figure Miranda July — someone whose creativity, mystery and unique mind is present in all facets of her art. Miranda’s sense of humor and her singular way of looking at the world makes her just the kind of person we’d love to rummage through the closets of, in order to dig up her curios, memories and influences. Instead of going to her living room, we’re inviting her to ours, so that she can cozy up and tell us what her past few summer vacations were like…and maybe the other seasons too!
