Maniac (Elijah Wood and Franck Khalfoun in person!)

Elijah Wood & director in person!
maniac
10/24/2012 - 9:30PM

In recent years, no one has been making horror films with the combination of brutality and finesse quite like the French — and now, gorehounds can rejoice that the job of remaking Maniac, William Lustig’s 1980 beautifully repulsive masterpiece, was taken on by the gallic duo of Alejandra Aja and Grégory Lavasseur (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha). No stranger to filmic exercices (their fierce debut Haute Tension was an experiment in how long one could sustain a single suspense scene), Aja and Lavsseur team with director Franck Khalfoun to create the rare occurrence of a full-length “POV” film (like Lady In The Lake, or Enter The Void), shooting all the action from the killer’s sick, sick eyes. Or should we say beautiful blue ones? Because, for the second time (the first being Sin City), Elijah Wood has been insightfully cast against type as a psychopath — showing how that famous gaze can go from mesmerizing to unnerving with just a shift of the light, and a little change of context. With a killer synth score by the improbably named “Rob”, and a stylish perfection that borders on the fetishistic, the new Maniac is a slick piece of sleaze sure to please the most hardcore of scumlovers — like us. Elijah Wood and director Franck Khalfoun will be here in person for a Q&A after the film!
Dir. Franck Khalfoun, 2012, HD presentation, 90 min.

Toad Road

Frederick Wiseman meets Blair Witch Project!
toadroad
10/23/2012 - 10PM

Presented by The Woodshed

“Toad Road should digest well with those sick of mediocre horror flicks with little moxie.” – indieWIRE

Winner of both the Best Director and Best Actor prizes at Fantasia Fest 2012, Toad Road wraps the real-life journey of young adults rolling and tripping their way to oblivion around a most devastating supernatural event. Deep within the crevices of Pennsylvania, there exists the dark tale of “Toad Road”: a path in a remote forest consisting of seven gates. To cross through each gate is to confront escalating personal nightmares — with the seventh gate leading to Hell itself. Locating a group of friends whose self-destructive partying finds them on the path to their own kind of personal Hell, documentary filmmaker Jason Banker drops these fine young folks down the real Toad Road, imposing only the occasional bit of narrative in order to create a kind of Frederick Wiseman-cum-Blair Witch Project docu-horror event unlike any other.
Dir. Jason Banker, 2012, HD presentation, 75 min.

Sleep Tight

This film is completely awesome!!!!

10/19/2012 - 10PM

The word “creepy” is constantly misused and abused all over the place in reference to modern horror films, but Sleep Tight (the new amazing work from [REC] co-director Jaume Balagueró) has one essential element at its core that really earns the word: a real make-your-skin-peel, gut-constricting CREEPAZOID. Every slithering aspect of Luis Tosar’s incredibly meticulous performance as the humdrum concierge of an upscale Barcelona apartment building — one who, in between playing doorman and delivering newspapers, ritualistically hides for hours under the bed of one particular resident and chloroforms her while she sleeps — gives off the radiating ideal of the secret sociopathic stalker. Unable to experience pleasure, he instead gets his quasi-jollies out of quietly making others suffer, with the cat-and-mouse relationship between him and Marta Etura as his unwilling nightly muse being only the tip of the freakish iceberg. Building on the Polanski legacy of “apartment horrors” like The Tenant and Repulsion, Sleep Tight is one of the most intensely creepy and satisfying clockwork contraptions in recent memory. THIS FILM IS AWESOME.
Dir. Jaume Balagueró, 2011, 102 min.

Sion Sono's "Guilty Of Romance"

From the director of Love Exposure!
guiltyofromance
10/18/2012 - 9:30PM

We’ve made no secret of the unrepentant film crush the Cinefamily has on Sion Sono. His mixture of cinematic intelligence and trashy sensibilities fits us like a tailored suit, and our enthusiasm for his films Love Exposure and Cold Fish in the last year or two has flowed intensely. He’s now hit a third home run in a row with this horrifying tale of sex and violence, concluding his trilogy of “Hate Films” with another satisfyingly constructed, potent and provocative movie. The sinful yin to Cold Fish’s heavy yang, Guilty of Romance is a similar tale of a female protagonist’s roiling Id boiling over, this time featuring the repressed and oppressed Izumi (Megumi Kagurazaka), whose escape from patriarchy starts by selling sausages in a supermarket, but ends down a rabbit hole of perversion and daytime prostitution. Guilty of Romance works like a more punishing, disturbing reworking of Bunuel’s Belle De Jour, with the darkest of consequences, and is sure to rile audiences in the best of ways. We’d love to say this is the L.A. premiere of Sono’s “latest” movie, but he’s so damn prolific, he’s already made two more! So, let’s just say it’s his latest film to play L.A. You’ll be glad we brought it to ya.
Dir. Sion Sono, 2011, HD presentation, 112 min.

10/14/2012 - 7PM
Co-presented by Chiller TV

Winner of Best Documentary Feature at Fantastic Fest 2012 — from the director of Best Worst Movie! Chances are you’ve come across one in your lifetime. Your neighbor, your co-worker, even someone in your family might be one. Months of their planning, designing and building leads up to a single night of terror — one that’s over in the blink of an eye. These people are “home haunters”. Every Halloween, the sleepy town of Fairhaven, MA erupts with endless styrofoam tombstones, backyard beasts and the most ambitiously creative spookery in the world, thanks to a few supremely dedicated local “haunters” devoted to the art of handcrafted monster-making. Michael Stephenson’s brand-new documentary The American Scream follows three of these horrific homesteads, to uncover the triumphs and tragedies that come with carrying the blackened banner of true Halloween spirit — and to revel in the artists’ collective genius, bred from the love of scaring the pants off their friends and neighbors. Michael Paul Stephenson will be here for a Q&A after the film!
