Everything Is Festival III: The Domination

Everything is Festival — the world’s greatest (and only) gonzo convention for found footage collectors, alternative comedy, and experimental artists — is back for its third installment, and it’s bigger than ever! Like our collective American waistlines, the festival proudly expands year after year, and we’re excited to announce that the 2012 lineup has reached stomach-stapling proportions. This year we present an insane and eclectic ELEVEN-DAY CELEBRATION of everything we love: discovery, weirdness, and just plain fun.

CLOSING NIGHT PARTY: "The Adventures of Pete And Pete" Reunion @ Orpheum Theatre!

peteandpete_newsite-480x309
8/28/2012 - 9PM

THIS SHOW TAKES PLACE AT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE, 842 S. Broadway, 90014! DOORS – 8PM. SHOWTIME – 9PM. NOTE: we are unfortunately unable to offer Cinefamily members free admission to this event.

Pete And Pete is and was the greatest thing since high-speed Internet. It shaped people’s lives in a really positive way, and that’s probably one of the nicest things that could be said about a kids’ TV show.” — Marah Eakin, A.V. Club

Every generation thinks the kids stuff they grew up with is best ever made–and those of us who grew up with Pete and Pete may actually be right.

While it only lasted three seasons (1993-1996), The Adventures of Pete and Pete imprinted a generation with its magical and moving mixture of mystery, sweetness, strangeness, and humor — how we remember childhood at its best. As Cinefamily’s Everything is Festival comes to a close, and FYF Fest begins, we are excited to unite our powers for good and bring to you the Ultimate Pete and Pete Reunion to end all Pete and Pete reunion shows. We’ll assemble on one stage virtually the entire population of Wellsville (from its creators to its residents), to wax nostalgic about the quintessential show about nostalgia, to explicate inside jokes, to deconstruct the immaculate mechanism behind the show’s making, and to have a great time. We’ll be flashing Petunia tattoos, eating Mr. Tastee ice cream, getting “loaded” on Orange Lazarus, and, for the first and (maybe) last time in history, listening to our favorite songs live from the band POLARIS — who are reuniting for this special show. This is Woodstock for Kreb Scouts, kiddies, and you’ll wanna say you were there (or you’ll be lying about it later, anyways.) Clear your calendar. Get on a plane. Evade the International Adult Conspiracy. Just don’t be a jerkweed, and do what it takes, cause you don’t wanna miss this show!

EIF - MEMBERS-ONLY EVENT: Super-Secret Horror Film "Long-Lost 35mm" show!

Can you handle the suspense?!
hfs2011_newsite
8/27/2012 - 10:30PM

NOTE: First-come, first-served admission to this event is only for current Cinefamily members +1

Taking the “gonzo archivist convention” aspect of Everything Is Festival! to its logical and deliciously delirious conclusion, the penultimate EIF! show features a certain classic horror film that has been “off the market”, theatrically-speaking, for at least the past several years — until now. Why, you ask? Because, up until this very moment, there have been zero extant 35mm prints of it anywhere on the collectors’ circuit. Which, when you find out the title of the film in question, is totally shocking, because it’s one of those pictures that we all have taken for granted. Hot-off-the-presses news: a friendly motion picture archive has just uncovered a 35mm print of this film stashed away in the deep recesses of a recently-donated collection, and Everything Is Festival! 2012 marks the first time the print will see the light of day. As a bonus Cinefamily members, this late-night screening party is just for you — plus, the title of the film will only be revealed right before this show starts. CAN YOU HANDLE THE EXCITEMENT?!?!

The next installment of Doug Benson’s Movie Interruption, where Doug and his friends (who, in the past, have included everyone from Brian Posehn to Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis) chill on the front row couches, mics in hand, and say whatever hilarious thing pops into their heads while a movie of their choosing unfolds on the screen. For their special Everything Is Festival 2012 show, Doug & Co. take on M. Night Shyamalan’s 2004 secret sheltered society shindig The Village!

EIF: Found Footage Battle Royale 2012

Like WWF, but without the greasy groping!
battleroyale2012_website
8/26/2012 - 10PM

People! The Found Footage Battle Royale calls for you! We’ve got a lot of Terribles and Terribl-ettes coming in from all across the country for this, so now is the perfect time to show off by taking down your peers! Think your collection of YouTube videos and VHS tapes is the best in the biz? Then prove it, creep! This tumultuous tourney of viral video insanity dares you to bring your A-game, and go head-to-head with your own kind! We want to see the weird, funny and insane clips that you’ve always wanted to show publicly — think of it like the WWF, but with videos instead of all that greasy groping stuff. You’’ll be judged by the audience applause-o-meter, so make sure your stuff is entertaining as a monster truck rally! Be forewarned: this could, and should, get ugly. Here’s how it works:

* Anyone is welcome to enter, but you must be there at the show in person for your entries to count.

* Submissions can vary from an unseen YouTube clip to a fully edited piece. We obviously want creativity, but, really, this is about showing off gems. Whatever the clip may be, just think to yourself “Will this go over well with an audience of screaming maniacs?”

* Each contestant must have a total of FIVE CLIPS ready to show, and sent to us by Saturday, AUGUST 25TH.

* Once we take a took at everyone’s submissions, SIXTEEN lucky contestants will be chosen.

* Clips cannot be longer than 2 MINUTES MAX! Anything longer will be cut short.

* Submissions can be sent to us a number of ways: 1) DVDs can be sent to The Cinefamily via snail mail (send to: The Cinefamily, ATTN: Found Footage Battle Royal, 611 N. Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA, 90036); or, 2) entries can be emailed to us at whatsupeit@gmail.com. We can take many formats, but since this stuff is going to be projected on the big screen, think “the bigger the quality, the better.”

* Costumes, character backgrounds, etc. are encouraged for in-person combat on the night of the show.

* Taunting and mocking of other contestants is also appreciated — as long as it’s non-violent and/or creepy.

* The winner will receive the only thing that matters — RESPECT.

EIF: Rock 'N' Roll Hotel

The mysterious rump-shaking oddity!
rockandrollhotel_newsite
8/26/2012 - 7:30PM

Like the Ark Of The Covenant emerging from its decades-long slumber in a dusty, secret government warehouse, the long-lost, unreleased ‘80s musical Rock ‘N’ Roll Hotel has emerged from cold storage for its very first Los Angeles screening EVER. Alright, so it might not a key to harnessing the heavens — but it definitely could be a real face-melter! Filmed in 1982, but permanently shelved for a variety of insane, thorny reasons, this feature-length neon-soaked music video (co-starring a young Judd Nelson) follows a rock trio who enter a Battle Of The Bands, going head-to-head with a rival group hellbent on grabbing the title, no matter what the cost. Originally shot in 3-D, Rock ‘N’ Roll Hotel was victim to both a trainwreck of a production and a botched non-release, and was thought lost for decades — until a lone VHS copy was recently excavated from the film’s set designer’s closet. Author Dale Brumfield, who discovered the film in 2010 and has the only known copy in existence, will be in attendance, to answer your burning questions about this mysterious rump-shaking oddity!

NOTE: our screening of Rock ‘N’ Roll Hotel is free. Suggested $12 donation at the door. To all who acquire advance tickets — thank you for your donation!

Co-presented by A Special Thing

Dan Harmon, formerly of NBC’s Community, and writer/director Rob Schrab have been fascinated by crap of all kinds for decades. In this 7th installment of Found Crap, Dan and Rob study a barrage of clips from bad comedy, sci-fi, horror and explainably odd footage. Anyone who has attended a Found Crap show in the past knows what’s in store, and all we can say to newcomers is make sure to have an extra pair of diapers with you, because you’re most likely going to poop your pants from laughing so damn hard. FEATURING: Midwest, video “horror” from the 90′s by Paul Knop, The infamous TALENT SHOW clip and probably Turkey Gun.

EIF - Star Wars: Uncut

The legendary viral phenomenon!
starwarsuncut_newsite
8/26/2012 - 11:45AM

One of our age’s great odes to communal creativity, Star Wars: Uncut is a shot-for-shot reinterpretation of the canonical 1977 sci-fi classic — cinematically retold by almost 500 different directors, all in 15-second “microchapters”! Using every single conceivable homemade live-action and animation angle, the crowdsourced team of filmmakers’ efforts to lovingly re-create Episode IV: A New Hope down to the last detail is awe-inspiring, heartwarming, and a fantastic testament to the power of our 21st-century democratized tools of creation. “[At] any point in ‘Star Wars: Uncut’, [you’ll] see Jedi children in suburban driveways, hand puppets, motion graphics, action figures, and hundreds of other no-budget techniques on display. The source material is so deeply embedded in our consciousness that no matter the style or homage — nods to Bergman, ‘Yellow Submarine’ and Simpsons characters abound — it’s impossible to lose your place, or your grin.” — Willamette Week. Don’t miss your chance to see this legendary viral video phenomenon in a unique, cozy Cinefamily big-screen setting!

aka Everything is Terrible! Presents “The Rise and Fall of God” or “Religion’s Greatest Shits!” or “God Is Alive And Well And Living in Branson”

Since ‘07, the found-footage collective Everything Is Terrible! has not only amassed so much gooey analog gold that even sifting through it as a viewer proves to be a problem — but also a few “cease and desist” letters that have forced the gang to bury some of their weirdest and most outrageous stuff. Well, fuck that! For one very special show, EiT! is proud to present the greatest thing to ever happen to VHS: organized religion! Whether you’re a God-fearing lunatic or an annoying atheist blowhard, let’s put our differences aside and laugh in the face of our Lord while demanding he proves his existence once and for all!

EIF: Monsters of Found Footage

found-footage
8/25/2012 - 6:30PM

In our gilded post-media age — where every single frame of video, every audio utterance, and everything else that could possibly be gloriously recontextualized is messed with on a regular basis — we forget that there was a time, one even less than a decade ago, when this was not commonplace. There once stood at the gates of Ye Olde Found Footage Fortress an intrepid network of analog dragonslayers whose provocative experimentation, hilarious juxtapositions and eye-popping visual acumen helped to create a new language of cinema through creative theft. These pioneers of perverting other people’s intellectual property all have amazing stories to tell about their days in the trim bin trenches — so come witness a live panel of found footage experts featuring TV Carnage, Animal Charm, the TV Sheriff, Craig Baldwin and more! These folks have all never before been together on the same stage, so this show promises to be a real humdinger that might actually rip a hole in the fabric of the time-space continuum.

EIF: Outsider Filmmakers A Go Go!

Beyond mainstream, indie and the underground!
outsider_newsite
8/25/2012 - 3:45PM

Beyond mainstream, beyond indie, and beyond the underground, there lies “outsider cinema”, the backyard domain of some of the world’s most creative, crafty, and truly cracked filmmakers ever to have cranked a camera (or to have ever hit the “record” button.) The handiwork of hobbyists for whom making movies is a release from the drudgery of a day job — or the escape valve for unquenched obsessions — these hidden-in-plain-sight masterminds work entirely without, and beyond the limits of conventional actors, storylines or even formal training. Whether it’s the expansive one-man casts of Los Angeles’ Laz Rojas (playing every male and female role), the vintage clockwork contraptions of San Diego’s Sid Laverents, the impassioned too-much-information asides of suburban Chicago’s Dave “The Rock” Nelson or the dizzying down-home charm of Arkansas’s Phil Chambliss, the results are always a unique and entertaining concoction of tall tales, nightmare visions, exhibitionistic fantasies and undefinable revelations. Join us in an epic presentation guaranteed to change the very idea of what a lone visionary is capable of — both in the field of art and in spite of it.

Directed by 9th-degree black belt philosopher/author/inspirational speaker Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, Miami Connection tells the story of fearless synth rock band Dragon Sound, as they embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice in the streets of Orlando, FL. “‘Miami Connection’ has repeatedly destroyed our audience in a more powerful way than anything else in the 15 years of our theater’s existence.” – Zack Carlson, Alamo Drafthouse Y.K. EIF TALENT SHOW (feat. Acapellasqatsi, Nick Offerman and more!)

Maybe the coolest show of all time!

8/24/2012 - 7:45PM

If EIF! is all about chaos (which it totally is), then this show in particular sums up what it’s really all about. Try for a moment to imagine an alternate universe where high school didn’t suck. Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) is your music teacher. The legendary Bob Baker’s Marionette Theatre asks you to the prom. Art collective Showbeast (showbeast.net) stops by during lunch period to make you laugh so hard that you spray milk out your nose. The Hi-Fidelity Quartet performs live Philip Glass scores to excerpts from Koyaanisqatsi (we’re calling it Acapellasqatsi”) at the Friday pep rally. Well, stop imagining and get with it, because this is for real! Any of the aforementioned events would be great on their own, but face it — you’ve got the attention span of a spastic pre-teen, and it’s about time we treated you as such. For one night only, we’re turning the Cinefamily into “Everything is Festival High School”, and giving you a talent show unlike any other. If you hate non-stop entertainment, then be warned, for this might be the coolest show of all time.

Fifty films, throngs of fans both here and throughout Asia, five Karate Illustrated Female World Champion titles, six black belts in different disciplines, a trail of asses kicked (if laid end-to-end) that would easily stretch ‘round the Equator — and she’s just getting warmed up! First capturing the American imagination in China O’Brien, the impossibly cool Cynthia Rothrock is one of the screen’s greatest solo mutilation squads, and we adore her to no end. Can you believe that Cynthia will join us on the Cinefamily stage, for a career-spanning Q&A that’ll make mincemeat out of the likes of your unworthy tuchus? From her beginnings as an aspiring teenage kung fu competitor to achieving the highest professional heights a disciple of the martial arts can achieve, to movie stardom first in Hong Kong followed by filmic fame on her home turf, Cynthia is peerless, powerful and a national treasure. 8/20/2012 - 8PM
Co-presented by A Special Thing

Show & Tell: a Cinefamily series that invites artists, filmmakers, musicians and other cultural heroes to divulge their deepest, darkest media obsessions by opening their closets, digging through their attic and plundering their garages to curate an evening of whatever they want to share! From thrift store finds to late-night Tivo, from foreign film bootlegs to home movies, from the popular to the perverse — all media will be presented live by the honored guests, as they take us on a personal tour of the audio, video and other ephemera that has inspired them, delighted them, or just plain freaked them out.

For our Everything Is Festival! 2012 edition, we very, very proudly welcome Joel Hodgson — creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Cinematic Titanic! Joel will show off not only his collection of ventriloquist dummies, but also various TV pilots he’s been involved in over the years (like the infamous The TV Wheel), and much more!

Join us at the gorgeous Saban Theatre, where we’ll watch our favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 stars and writers — Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, J. Elvis Weinstein and Mary Jo Pehl — in their new incarnation Cinematic Titanic, riffing their way through Ted V. Mikels’ The Doll Squad (the 1973 film that has been rumored to have been the inspiration for “Charlie’s Angels”) on a gigantic screen, in a newly-restored 1930s movie palace. It’s fair to say an entire generation of comedy fans are deeply indebted to these gurus of riffery for their reference-heavy jokes, their goofy spirit, and the thousands of hours’ worth of good times they gave us all. As well, the fact that many of us Earth citizens were exposed for the first time to otherworldly mutant film classics like Pod People, Manos: The Hands Of Fate and the Joe D’Amato sword-and-sorcery anti-epic Cave Dwellers (aka Ator, The Flying Eagle) makes MST3K not just a landmark of experimental television comedy, but a tireless missionary of B-movie culture. They truly brought all these cinematic oddities to the masses! Plus, our partners at Cinespia are bringing DJs, Cinefamily’s gonna bring the crazy pre-show action and plenty of special surprises, and there’s gonna be a huge afterparty!
