“Don’t tread on an ant/You’ll end up black and blue,” warned Adam and the Ants’ in their 1980 single “Antmusic.” Adam Ant—universally recognized by the white stripe painted across his face, and the striking imagery of Prince Charming and The Dandy Highwayman—was at the height of his fame. Flash forward 20 years, and he was institutionalized for a myriad of mental health issues. But his pluck and intensity survived, and he’s out on his first tour in 15 years, as the Blue Black Hussar. Director Jack Bond charts Ant’s return to the music scene, in this doc featuring performance footage, actress Charlotte Rampling, producer Mark Ronson, and artist Allen Jones.

DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK: Danny Says (Encore)

DANNYSAYS_480_309
8/27/2015 - 10:30PM

Danny Says is a documentary on the life and times of Danny Fields. Since 1966, Danny Fields has played a pivotal role in music and “culture” of the late 20th century: working for the Doors, Lou Reed, Nico, Judy Collins and managing groundbreaking artists like the Stooges, the MC5 and the Ramones. Danny Says follows Fields from Harvard Law dropout, to the Warhol Silver Factory, to Director of Publicity at Elektra Records, to “punk pioneer” and beyond. Danny’s taste and opinion, once deemed defiant and radical, has turned out to have been prescient. Danny Says is a story of marginal turning mainstream, avant garde turning prophetic, as Fields looks to the next generation. Danny Says is lead by Fields voice and is largely crafted from over 250 hours of present-day interviews and items from Danny Fields’ immense archive (thousands of photographs, audio cassettes, ephemera).

Dir. Brendan Toller, 2015, 105 min.

DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK: Her Aim Is True (w/ Director Karen Whitehead in person!) + Fortune - A short film by Naomi Yang (w/ live score by Damon & Naomi!)

HERAIMISTRUE_480_309
8/20/2015 - 7:30PM

This award-winning film by British filmmaker Karen Whitehead, tells Jini Dellaccio’s incredible and unlikely story as the first woman photographer of rock ‘n’ roll in its early years. Snubbing convention, Dellaccio reinvented herself in the mid 1960s as one of the most daring and innovative composers in the field, working with legendary rockers from The Sonics to Neil Young, and even capturing early performances by bands such as The Who and The Rolling Stones. For the first time in 50 years, Dellaccio shares her story and stunning archive, reuniting with musicians and rock photographers for a riveting voyage tracing the roots of her avant-garde artistry and fearless life including her stint playing jazz saxophone with all girl bands in the 1930s and crafting jaw-dropping portfolios for models, that began when she was living in California. With a soundtrack and interviews that capture the vibrant music subculture behind the “Northwest Sound”, the film celebrates a legacy lost and found in an enduring story about love, music, indie spirits and breaking the rules. HER AIM IS TRUE has been executive produced by Eddie Vedder (“Pearl Jam”).

Dir. Karen Whitehead, 2013, 70 min.

A silent film directed by musician Naomi Yang (formerly of Galaxie 500), with original soundtrack by her current band Damon & Naomi.

NORMAN’s father was a society portrait painter. After his father’s death, Norman faces the burden of inheriting his father’s life’s work. He struggles with conflicting feelings about a man who was a gifted artist, but a difficult and unsupportive father. In this emotional journey Norman reconnects with his own artistic nature, something that had not been possible while his father was alive — finally emerging from his father’s shadow, and the shadow of his grief.

Co-edited with acclaimed experimental filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky.

Scratch_480_309
8/17/2015 - 7:30PM

Doug Pray’s 2001 Scratch was the second of the filmmaker’s great early aughts music documentaries. His debut, the stellar Hype explored the explosion of Seattle’s grunge scene with the same giddy, immersive techniques he brings to his awesome sophomore effort. For Scratch, Pray turns his keen and curious eye on turntable culture, from the birth of hip hop to the geek djs who continue to push the boundaries of scratching and sampling. Using emotive, infectious live performances and intimate interviews with pioneering artists like Afrika Bambaataa , Mix Master Mike and DJ Shadow, Pray gives a moving, poetic testament to the power of the beat. Trust us, even if you hate this music, you’ll love this movie.

DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK: Rye Coalition: The Story of the Hard Luck 5 (Q &A moderated by Bill Badgley w/ Dave Clifford, Allison Wolfe & Dir. Jenni Matz in person!)

RyeCoalition_480_309
7/23/2015 - 7:30PM

When they signed with one of the world’s biggest record labels, Rye Coalition was primed to finally get their glory, or so it seemed. Like countless rockers before them, childhood best friends started a band in a basement with a couple simple goals in mind: have fun and play good music. As one of the first bands to develop the new “emo” sound in the early 90s, they were at the forefront of a movement that included Shellac, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker and Karp (with whom they later recorded a legendary 12″ split). Rye Coalition’s first recording was a demo cassette tape backed by a tour in a beat up schoolbus long before most of them had their driver’s license. As their talent and fan base grew, they released albums on indie labels and toured the country on bigger and bigger bills: (Mars Volta, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters). After gaining momentum from 2002′s “On Top” LP, engineered by Steve Albini, they were signed to Dreamworks Records and none other than Dave Grohl (Nirvana) came on as their producer. Then, it all imploded.

Supplemented by the band’s home movies the filmmaker has continuously documented these singular rockers for over a decade, brazenly chronicling choice moments with Rye Coalition (and those who know them well) on tour, at home and in the studio. Although the band was praised by critics and supported by an absurdly dedicated grassroots fan base, somehow these Jersey rockers never got their due. Until now.

Dir: Jenni Matz, 2014, 77 minutes.

DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK: Tell Me Do You Miss Me: A Film about Luna (with director Matthew Buzzell and members of Luna in person!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
7/16/2015 - 7:30PM

In 2005, the four members of the NYC indie-rock band Luna confronted the ceiling of their ambition, their modest success, and their conflicted feelings about each other as they embarked on their final world tour and uncertain middle-aged futures. Laced with moments of both humor and melancholia, Tell Me Do You Miss Me earnestly exposes the underbelly of a touring rock band in their final days together at the dawn of a changing music industry. Sonically supported with Luna’s dreamy catalog of indie-pop and lush travelogue footage with adventurous stops in Japan, Spain, and England, Tell Me Do You Miss Me is an elegy for an era.

Dir. Matthew Buzzell, 2006, HDCAM, 102 min.
