ENVY: Ladies They Talk About

“What she needs is a good sock in the jaw,” spits one of Nan Taylor’s fellow county inmates, the first of many envious incarcerated women to throw some serious shade in Warner Bros’ Pre-Code glory, Ladies They Talk About. This precursor to the women-in-prison films of the late ‘60s features the indefatigable Barbara Stanwyck at perhaps her most rough-and-tumble, adapting (with her trademark swagger) as the “new fish” in the penitentiary pond. Ladies makes bearing the ENVY of every rung on the prison food chain look downright luxurious, with each ostentatious cell adorned with houseplants, hand-crank Victrolas and a seemingly endless supply of Chesterfield cigarettes. As Nan’s adversaries begin to grow and her fate becomes more uncertain, even seemingly unlimited access to an endless supply of lingerie can’t keep her block mate’s jealousies at bay.
