Better Than Something: Jay Reatard (L.A. premiere!)

An intimate, high-energy portrait of Jimmy Lee Lindsey, Jr. (aka Jay Reatard), the modern-day garage rock icon who passed away too soon, but left us an unbelievable volume of work. Having created a massive discography spread out over approximately 100 7″s, EPs, and full-length albums released on labels like Matador, Fat Possum and In The Red, Jay was also a ceaseless live performer, and was only 18 years old when he brought The Reatards out on their first international tour! While his influence and fan base grew worldwide, Jay remained a constant fixture in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. Better Than Something — begun while Jay was still with us, but completed posthumously — interweaves cinema vérité, interviews, live performances, and early archival footage alongside moments from an incredibly candid week spent with Jay in his hometown of Memphis. It’s an intimate portrait and glimpse into Jay’s punk rock world: “the perfect venue for dealing with himself and all his issues, and what it’s like just to be a human.” (Alicja Trout, Lost Sounds) Filmmakers Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz will join us for a Q&A after the screening!
