ANIMATION BREAKDOWN: MoominsMania! feat. Moomins on the Riviera

Come frolic in Moominvalley as we celebrate Finland’s finest and warm’n’fuzziest export — The Moomins! Created in the 40s by singularly brilliant Finnish author/illustrator Tove Jansson, the adorable hippo-like family, and their coterie of colorful and peculiar friends, have enchanted audiences worldwide for generations. Their madcap misadventures, captured in numerous books and comics, have been dubbed “a surrealist masterpiece” by none other than Neil Gaiman. Jansson, a fascinating character in her own right, ranks among the finest creators of (ostensible) children’s fare. She imbued her creations with the cute n’ cuddly pathos and surprising depth that elevates works like Winnie-the-Pooh or The Little Prince—one could easily scribe a “Zen of Snufkin” or “Tao of Too-Ticky”. If you’re already a fan, this program promises a deluge of delights, and if you’ve never traversed the Moominvalley before, prepare to be welcomed with open arms and a pot of strawberry tea. We’ll take in selections from the myriad Moomins TV adaptations, documentary clips of Jansson and an exclusive screening of Moomins on the Riviera, the charming and utterly gorgeous new 2D animated feature—adapted directly from the original comic strips and released in celebration of Jansson’s 100th birthday—shown here in its original Finnish (with subtitles)!

Dir. Xavier Picard, 2014, DCP, 80 min.
